Liljehomstorget, Stockholm 2000-2011

Designing a public place is about solving needs, highlighting, clarifying and charging them with the purpose of creating the conditions for the city's life. Unconditional rooms for life itself, of which we know nothing. It is about creating a square that lives on in the memory and which emphasizes the square's intrinsic value as a human meeting place in the public space.

Liljeholmen is the fourth largest communication point in Stockholm. A lot of people move here every day. Here is a commercial center with a three-storey mall.

We wanted to create a square with a strong identity. Sergelstorg and Vällingby are such places, with a powerful ornament in the ground. Liljeholmen has an ornament of large flowers as an intarsia.

In the square there are circular spatial seats whose backs are vaulted sheets painted in two green shades. These are perforated by thousands of holes in various large circles. These transmit light nicely. Trees have been planted as if they were randomly thrown out.

In the more elongated part of the square there is a roof and the idea was from the beginning to have a square trade. The roof has different colored tinted and blasted windows that correspond to the irregular pillar row. Benches of different length are placed around and under the ceiling.

The communication between the other entrance to the subway, the buses on the other side and the crossroads has demanded that nothing should hinder the passage and the public exchanges, of the large flow of people. The design of the pavement and pavement along the pedestrian path therefore has an awareness in detail, a kind of exclusivity. Here and there has a light trail, a dash of light, which occasionally changes color, different for different seasons. A subtle decoration that requires a little attention.
